Lax 101 & Resources
Be a student of the game at any age!
We at Troy Terps know that lacrosse may not only be new to our players, but also to parents, guardians and other members of our growing community. Below is a number of great resources and information that can help guide you along the way to knowing some of the ins and outs of this amazing game!
Weather Policy
Lacrosse, like many other sports, is played on nice days and also in the rain. Parents and players should always expect a scheduled practice to continue in the event of rain or possible light snow early in the spring season.
Troy Terps Coaches will always error on the side of caution when it comes to weather and put the wellness of the players first when making decisions.
Lightning – We follow standard youth sports policy for lighting, if there is lighting, practice or play will be suspended for 30 minutes from last lightning event.
Parent/Player Code of Conduct
PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCT
-
No swearing or abusive language on the field or at any team function.
-
No lashing out at any official no matter what the call is. The coaching staff will handle all officiating matters.
-
Anyone who receives a penalty will go straight to the penalty box. I understand penalties are part of lacrosse and not a negative reflection of my play. I will also not be upset when I receive a penalty.
-
Fighting is not tolerated and will result in disciplinary action.
-
No drinking, smoking or use of tobacco at any team function.
-
I will conduct myself in a respectful manner at all team functions. This includes home and away games and respect for the away team’s personnel and property.
-
I will support my teammates and encourage their progress and development playing lacrosse.
-
I will follow the State of Michigan, CDC’s, and Troy School District’s protocols for COVID 19.
PARENTS CODE OF CONDUCT
-
I (and my guests) will be positive role models and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy and by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, officials and spectators at every game, practice, or any other related event.
-
I (and my guests) will not encourage any unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player or parent, such as booing and/or taunting, or using profane language or gestures.
-
I will ensue that my child’s playing environment is free from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol, and I (and my guests) will refrain from their use at the sports event.
-
I will respect the officials and their authority during games.
-
I will never question, discuss, or confront coaches at the game field or practice. If a parent requests to speak to a coach, an agreed-upon time and place will be scheduled via email. (It is recommended the “24 hour” rule be utilized when discussing any issues between coaches and players/parents) If I find I am not satisfied after speaking with my coach, I understand I should then contact the Community Education Manager responsible for the program.
-
I will ensure my child treats other players, coaches, officials and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, gender or ability.
-
I will promote the emotional and physical well-being of the athletes ahead of any personal desire I may have for my child and in the desire to win.
-
I will emphasize practices and skill development and how they benefit my child by ensuring he/she arrives and is retrieved in a timely fashion at all scheduled practices and games.
-
I will inform the City of Troy School, Continuing Education office and my coach of any physical disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child and/or the safety of others.
-
I will teach my child to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts in a sportsmanlike manner.
-
I will teach my child that doing one’s best is most important, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or by his/her performance.
-
We encourage all parents & fans to cheer on the Terps with enthusiasm, however, it is both a distraction and counter-productive for parents to direct instructions to players from the sidelines during games and/or practices.
-
I will follow the State of Michigan, CDC’s, and Troy School District’s protocols for COVID 19.

Balancing Compeittion with Development
Playing time is always a big concern for parents. The game of lacrosse does not naturally tend to produce “equal” playing time situations. Certain positions can stay on the field longer than others. For instance, middies need to shift roughly 2 or 3 times the frequency of other players because they cover the full field. Attack and defensive players typically cover half the field and can stay on the field longer. U12/U14 teams play with penalties and “man- up” or “man-down” situations. There are times when a player who just got on the field will need to shift off to get the right player in for one of these situations. We try to keep track of these situations so no one gets shorted, but if you’ve ever seen a lacrosse game, it is managed chaos at times and the best of coaches will short a player. It is our ultimate goal for every age group to have 2 teams; 1 team for new players and 1 team for more advanced and experienced players. Having 2 teams allows both new and experienced players to advance and grow their skills.
U8 (1/2): This age group is instructional along with some games and scrimmages. They will be matched-up with local teams and there may be some tournament games as well. Playing time will be equalized as much as possible.
U10 (3/4): Playing time will be equalized as much as possible throughout the season. Competitive games may see playing times adjust slightly.
U12 (5/6): Playing time is not necessarily equalized at this age group and older. All Players will play but as the game progresses playing time will be decided by the coach.
U14 (7/8): There are several players on this team that have been playing the sport for a long time, and a few players that are relatively new to the sport. Some of the games will be very competitive and playing time is not equal. It should be expected at the end of close games, not all players will be given equal playing time. For other games, that are not close, every attempt will be made to allow playing time for the more novice players.
Advanced Players Per Age Group – There may be some players that are more advanced than their age group. “Playing Up” an age group is allowed by must be approved first by the coaching staff. Skills, Physical Capability and Maturity are all items taken into consideration when deciding if a player is capable to play in an older age group.
Troy Terps Troy School District Photo Release
By signing up your child to play Troy Terps Lacrosse you consent to the use of images or likeness of my child/ward for promotional purposes by Troy Schools and Troy Terps Lacrosse, including publication on the Troy Schools and Troy Terps Lacrosse website, social media pages, etc.
Required Boys Equipment
• Lacrosse stick
• Lacrosse helmet w/ chin strap
• Shoulder pads
• Arm guards
• Gloves
• Mouth guard
• Protective cup
• Athletic cleats*
(Hockey shoulder pads work fine for lacrosse. Hockey elbow pads work but are not ideal. Hockey gloves will not work for lacrosse due to the rigidity in the thumb and wrist cuff. This limits a player’s hand dexterity and ability to cradle the ball.)
Required Girls Equipment
• Girls Lacrosse Stick
• Lacrosse eye guards
• Mouth guard
• Optional: Girls lacrosse headgear and gloves
• Athletic cleats*
Goalie Equipment
Troy Terps provides goalie equipment sets for each team. However, many full-time goalies eventually purchase their own gear.
* Athletic cleats are optional, but strongly recommended. Those designed for lacrosse, football or soccer are acceptable.
